Animal Totems and Guides

A totem is a spirit being, sacred object, or symbol of a tribe, clan, family or individual. Some Native American tribe’s believe that each person is connected with nine different animals that will accompany him or her throughout their lifetime, acting as guides.

Different animal guides (AKA spirit guides, power animals) move in and out of a person’s life depending on one’s current path, challenge, or task encountered along a life journey, whereas a totem animal is with a person for life, both in the physical and spiritual world. Though people may identify with different animal guides throughout their lifetimes, it is this one totem animal that acts as the main and constant guardian spirit.

Some intuitively know their totem animal and are inexplicably drawn to it through a strong pull by the animal’s energy. Others may not be quite so sure. To identify your totem, notice a pattern of connection with an animal, either through an interest in the animal, similar or admired characteristics, your dreams, or other interactions throughout your life.

Both animal totems and guides offer power and wisdom when you communicate and convey your respect and trust.

Whenever an animal shows up in your life that causes you to take notice of it, whether in physical form, through dreams, as visions, or symbols, you can be sure that it is a guide. Make note of what is going on in your life, then think about what attributes that animal possesses that would apply to your situation, then act accordingly. Journaling will help you keep track and help you recall your lessons.
